More Information
Warm weather activities, such as sightseeing, backpacking or safaris, benefit from clothing that not only helps you stay cool but provides protection from UV and biting insects, and allows travel essentials to be carried securely.
The Katmai combines the ultra-cooling and protective lightweight Parameta A fabric with travel friendly design features that help keep out insects, provide discreet pockets and allow freedom of movement. The Katmai provides protection and cooling in one easy care, very weight efficient shirt.
All Parameta A fabrics wick very effectively, rapidly spreading perspiration over a large area to provide maximum evaporation in order to keep you cool at higher temperatures. It blocks virtually all damaging UV rays (UPF 50+), and the close weave deters biting insects.
Parameta A fabric comes in assorted weights to suit different requirements:

The Katmai Light uses Parameta A fabric, which is cool, lightweight, quick drying and protects against sun (SPF 50+ equivalent) and insects. The generous pockets provide secure and hidden storage and don’t distort the garment’s fit or your ease of movement when full.
So expect travel-friendly warm weather protection coupled with discreet and useful pocketing in a very weight efficient package.
The Parameta A fabric used for Páramo trek and travel wear provides superior performance for warm weather. As well as feeling light and cool, it is designed to actively cool you by spreading perspiration to prevent pooling and using every last drop of perspiration to cool you. The dense weave not only blocks virtually all harmful UV rays but also very effectively deters biting insects. Many other ‘insect deterrent’ fabrics use a treatment which will wash out after only a few uses. It dries very rapidly making it ideal for travel and expeditions when washing facilities may be limited.
''My next purchase was a Páramo shirt, which is great to walk in. The shirt has two decent size breast pockets for mobile a phone to take pictures and cards and money for a drink at the end of the walk. It also has a large concealed pocket for an OS map.''

“We spent a week travelling through central Cappadocia in central Turkey, backpacking and hitch-hiking through the barren, dusty region. The Páramo shirts worked brilliantly, keeping me dry, warm and cool as I moved from cave systems to highland steppe, walking in backing sun carrying all my kit. The blue Parameta A shirt was washed midweek in a sink, wrung dried and still looked good enough to wear on the flight home!”

“Just come back from a 2 weeks wildlife safari in Northern Tanzania. I have to say the Katmai Shirts and Maui II Trousers were fantastic - really comfortable, washed easily, dried quickly and best of all, I didn't get a single insect bite! (I'm the one that insects usually love most). I can't recommend these garments high enough!”

The Katmai Light Parameta A fabric is ultra-cooling, holding perspiration close to your skin and evaporating it to keep you cool. It provides UV protection so is ideal for warm, sunny weather. Because the fabric provides active cooling, the shirt may be less comfortable in cooler, windier conditions, especially if you get wet. In more temperate conditions, we suggest a wicking baselayer in Parameta T+ or Parameta G, if necessary worn under a Nikwax Windproof, to provide less cooling.
Parameta A is an active cooling fabric, very effective in hot conditions, and so is often worn alone. If extra protection is wanted in windy or showery conditions it can be combined with a Nikwax Cotton+ outer or a Nikwax Windproof. Both of these will help to deflect wind and showers without inhibiting breathability or adding significant insulation.
In hot conditions, we recommend pairing Parameta A® shirts with a pair of light, fast-drying Parameta A® Cotton+ Trousers.
