When you are wild camping, your outdoor gear needs to work that extra bit harder for you. For a start, you are carrying on your back everything you need and what clothing you have with you has to keep you warm and dry for the duration of the multi-day trip without weighing you down. Choosing such kit and getting the balance right can be crucial to having an enjoyable adventure – too light and with limited protection from what the fickle British weather can throw at you can mean you are left cold and soggy all night; too heavy and you’ll be struggling under the weight of your load. Ideally you need functional kit that doubles up to give you clothing that performs well across a range of climatic conditions whilst also giving you comfort over an extended period of time. This is because you are often wearing a jacket for example all day, all night and sometimes the day after as well.
Geoff Shoults is an all-round outdoor enthusiast and professional photographer. This is his account of an epic 27-day expedition on skis through the harsh, yet breath-taking terrain of the Norwegian mountains and how his Páramo gear allowed him to go further, survive the extreme terrain and do so in comfort.
Continue readingJustin Minns is a professional landscape photographer and unsurprisingly, spends a lot of his time outdoors. He specialises in dramatic, atmospheric images and as the best conditions often occur when the weather is ‘bad’, capturing them involves being out in all weathers. Days can be long, often starting in the early hours of the morning, chasing the light late into the evening or even working in the middle of the night (as you are about to discover) and it’s important for him to be comfortable so he can stay focused whatever the weather.
As Ambassador for the UN Convention on Migratory Species, Sacha Dench campaigns to raise awareness of the problems facing many species and habitats around the world. Her latest expedition, Flight of the Osprey, is an innovative conservation project undertaken in collaboration with UN agencies, scientists, media and governments – and Páramo is honoured to have been chosen as its official clothing sponsor.
We were delighted to bump into writer and wildlife guide, David Chandler, at this year’s Global BirdFair event in Rutland, which brings together wildlife conservationists, representatives of nature travel, birders and natural history enthusiasts from all over the world.
David is skilled in introducing non-expert audiences to the natural world and worked for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and BirdLife International for over 16 years before going freelance. He has a life-long interest in wildlife and communicates the natural world with huge enthusiasm.
David recently reviewed our famous Páramo Poncho for the Gear Finder pages of Bird Watching magazine and we’re very excited to share his findings with you…
Inspired by the phenomenal response to our Zero Footprint project where every photo over a 5 year period was taken from the same location, Morag and I (Morag Paterson & Ted Leeming) have recently launched a not-for-profit web community, Zero Footprints, to act as a voice and hub for photographers across the globe exploring any theme relating to climate change. Our objectives are simple; to showcase extraordinary photography, to raise awareness and discussion on climate change and to contribute directly to charities working in the field.
Continue readingWhen I pack for an overseas film shoot my first thought is ‘what can I pack that I don’t mind destroying?’. Usually I can expect the shoots to be in pretty extreme environments (think mountains/ deserts/ jungle). As a result I have an enormous drawer full of crapped-out clothing which include: a pair of combat trousers with more stitch marks than a rag doll, another pair which are gaffa-taped together and pretty much all of my shirts have holes in places there shouldn’t be holes. This is what I have worn on adventures for almost a decade – disposable clothing – because nothing tends to survive long in the field when you’re crawling through the dirt and dust, running up mountainsides, jumping in rivers and then sleeping in these same clothes.
